“Brutalist Buildings of London - Part 1” - Original Artwork by Mai Sommer

“Timeline of the Brutalist Buildings of London - Part 2” - Original Artwork by Mai Sommer

This fantastic artwork is by graphic designer Mai Sommer. Mai hails from Copenhagen, but studied in London for her Master's in Graphic Design. While studying and working in London, she specialised in font and way-finding.

The intricate artworks showcase 11 iconic brutalist buildings in the London area, complete with their construction dates and locations. The details of the concrete colour and structural typology are also provided.

We interviewed Mai to learn a little more about the artwork.

Mai Sommer- Graphic Designer

GA: Mai, tell us why you chose this topic to illustrate?
Mai: I find Brutalist buildings interesting because they can create conversation and debate. Are they beautiful or are they ugly? Should they be honoured or should they be demolished? There are so many narratives and anecdotes centred around them - historically, politically and socially.

GA: What did you learn that was of most interest to you on the project?
Mai: Firstly, how different types of concrete can be presented in a very futuristic style. Secondly, the remaining Brutalist buildings are clear, living evidence of where bombs hit London during the Second World War. Fun fact: Ian Fleming used the surname of the architect Ernö Goldfinger for the Bond villain, much to the Architect’s chagrin.

GA: Do you think Brutalism is making a come back in London/Europe?
Mai: I think Brutalism has created such a unique look, especially for London, that it’s hard not to be influenced by it. I believe it will make a comeback but it will be interpreted in new ways, incorporated into other designs.
