Public Concourses
Level 3&5

LONDON
COMPLETED 2006

The Tate Modern Public Concourses are a fun, interactive space located on Levels 3&5 of the museum. Its referred to as ‘The Learning Zone’ – a contextual hub for the Tate Modern collection. In this designated space, visitors young and old are invited to play games, ask questions and seek a deeper level of engagement with the subject matter and personalities that make up the world leading art collection.

OUR ROLE

Greenway Associates were commissioned as the cost consultants on this project with Mark Greenway as the lead QS. We worked alongside designer Ab Rogers. We also had the pleasure of working with Ab Rogers and his team on the Science Museum and Dreamland. Ab Rogers is the son of the late Richard Rogers, a renowned royal of architecture and a true visionary.

THE PROJECT

The Public Concourses were designed with the purpose of breaking down the conventional barriers between visitors and the museum collections, by providing a space where visitors can relax, play, watch and learn in a truly sensory and tactile environment. Dynamic, interactive objects in the form of vivid red geometric sculptures fill the space. Informal furniture, large-scale graphics and multi-user screens can be enjoyed passively, while playful interactive activities are available for the younger age groups. The Public Concourses beautifully represent the design style of Ab Rodgers, who is well known for his eclectic and innovative approach.

PROJECT CHALLENGES AND ACHIEVEMENTS

The main challenge for the whole team was managing the disparate ‘kit of parts’ that made up the entirety of this project. This kit included large GRP components, integrated audio-visual hardware and bespoke pieces of interactive software. There was no one main contractor. Everyone in the team was closely involved with the project’s development. The final installations had to take place in what was a busy, high profile museum environment.

As a whole the project was a modest success. It was on time, on budget, visually arresting, with interactives that worked well
