LONDON LOVES: The Rolling Bridge @ Paddington Basin

The regeneration of the Grand Union Canal area, now better known as Paddington Basin, has been a highlight to watch over the years, and one of our favourite installations there has to be The Rolling Bridge by Thomas Heatherwick.

Completed in 2004, this functional bridge usually goes unnoticed, providing a simple way for pedestrians to cross a part of the canal. However, when necessary, it coils up over itself, allowing boats, and often kayakers and SUP’ers to moor their water crafts.

The bridge won the British Structural Steel Design Award in 2005 - a well deserved accolade for it’s designer, Thomas Heatherwick. We had the pleasure of working with the Thomas Heatherwick studio on the Heatherwick show at the V&A and enjoyed consulting on their unique installations for this show.
